  • Days 1–3 — access and inventory. We obtain the access we need to your systems and build a complete inventory of what is actually running: instances, databases, clusters, pipelines, domains, certificates, backups. In parallel, a kickoff session with your CTO or senior developers establishes what the business is trying to do with all of it.
  • Days 3–5 — walkthrough, monitoring and automation. We work through the systems in detail, then set up monitoring and the first automations, so that the environment starts telling us when something is wrong instead of waiting for a user to notice.

By the end of day 5 you have three things in your hands: the inventory, working monitoring, and a cost report. That is the deliverable, not a discovery document promising one. In practice, the cost report is where most engagements find their first return — which brings us to the numbers.

What a cloud cost review actually finds

Generic articles about DevOps talk about “identifying unused cloud resources.” Here is one real account, in one real six-month window.

The client is a multinational company in the music and online streaming industry. The figures below are one AWS account of several, taken from the account’s own cost reports between February and August 2026. August is prorated to a full-month run-rate.

Read the shape of it before the savings: this bill grew by 73% in four months, from $7,251 in February to $12,558 in June. That is the pattern a cost review exists to catch. Nobody decided to triple-book the account — it drifted, one reasonable-looking change at a time, and nothing in the environment was watching the total.

From the June peak, the account came down to a $7,739 run-rate in August: −38% in two months, or $4,819 a month1.63 times the monthly cost of the Growth retainer, and roughly $57,800 a year. Note what the claim is and is not: we did not halve a stable bill. We stopped a runaway one and returned it to its baseline, and the August run-rate is still 6.7% above February.

Two line items carried most of it:

Container images: $766 → $24 a month, a 97% reduction. The Elastic Container Registry had no working lifecycle policies, so every image ever pushed was still being paid for, every month, forever. At AWS’s $0.10 per GB-month that bill represents roughly 7.7 TB of container images, reduced to about 240 GB. Lifecycle policies are not a one-off cleanup: they are a rule that keeps the registry at that size permanently, which is why the saving does not decay.

Databases: $5,492 → $1,387 between June and July. Two oversized Aurora instances — a db.r7g.8xlarge and a db.r7g.4xlarge — had grown to $4,186 a month by June, and were gone from the July invoice. Database instances are routinely the largest single line item on a cloud bill, and the least often revisited after the day they were sized.

None of this required a migration, a new vendor, or a FinOps SaaS subscription. It required somebody senior looking at the invoice with the architecture in front of them.
